Back in the hotel, I peel out of my jeans and hang them over the sink. I keep the suite door open and one ear toward Mom while I change. When I return, I have a fat black photo album under my arm. It’s something I pulled aside while packing the condo, something I haven’t seen in decades. This album, one volume from a set of twenty, are from my mother’s many years of cataloging her side of the family. I’m not sure how much of her collection my father kept and moved with them to Florida. But I only recall boxing about five albums. As for the antiques she preserved over the years—the family milking stools, the telephone tables, the mantel clocks—I saw none.
